The T-80BVM is the latest upgrade of the Russian T-80 main battle tank. With this modernization, it is as lethal and hard to crack as the T-90M, the Leopard 2, and Ariete MBTs as it can face the Abrams M1A2 on equal terms on the battlefield. It has improved armor protection with the addition of RELIKT ERA (advanced explosive reactive armor kit) on the turret and hull glacis. It is also fitted with side armor plates and skirt rubber. The rear side of the tank is reinforced by grill cage armor. Since its engine has the ability to quickly start when temperature is freezing, it is called the "Arctic" model.
The T-80BVM also features a new 125mm 2A46M4 SB gun and a 12.7mm machine gun emplaced at an automatic weapon station, aside from the coaxial 7.62mm. The tank carries 45 rounds, both HEAT and armor-piercing Sabot ammunition. The gun is fitted with a PNM Sosna-U gunner sight, with thermo-imaging system, and camera. It is powered by an upgraded gas turbine engine (GTD-1250-TF), which generates 1,250 HP. This engine gives the T-80BVM and edge over other tanks as it enables it to operate in extremely cold weather conditions.
